ROH ROH FIGHT THE POWAH
OH. DID I MENTION I DOWNLOADED THE INFAMOUS GURREN LAGANN OUT OF CURIOSITY AND WATCHED IT ALL OVER THE COURSE OF LIKE... THREE DAYS? (This was over a week ago.)
::NINJA::
I feel, perhaps because the internet has spoiled so much about it for me, that I found the first part of it entertaining but not really emotionally involving (even at the big first spoiler)? But then as I progressed, it was really cool to see how characters, especially Simon, grew and matured, and the excellent, beautifully colored animation and pretty damn good music (good enough that I downloaded the OST) made it all the more enjoyable. Since it's a mecha anime, of course the mecha stuff got OVER THE TOP AND INCREDIBLY RIDICULOUS, and there was plenty of gratuitous fanservice over Yoko's boobs, but I took it with a grain of salt and laughed at it.
In fact, the more I think back on the series, the more I feel like I appreciate it. It had a really good ending, and although the whole thing is based on one of those typical crazy, quasi-BS-philosophical anime plots, it was planned extremely well for the fact that once you finish the final episode, you can rewatch the first episode and gawk at all the crazy foreshadowing of events that come, plus it's cool to see how far Simon comes from the beginning. I feel like that's the real meat of the story--Simon finding his purpose and courage in life, and I dunno, I found I really related to that. One could argue that perhaps the characters changed too fast and too unrealistically over the course of the story, but... I still liked it. XD; Seeing Simon gradually grow from a scared little kid into a brave little kid into a misplaced idealist into a BADASS ADULT was awesome, and not something you get to see in a lot of series.
And did I mention the animation was gorgeous? I usually like muted colors, but the colorfulness in Gurren Lagann was awesome, and it was cool how they threw in rough-edged, scratchy animation every now and then. My only complaint would be when they tried to throw in CG? That was kinda lame. D:
Oh, also I LOVED THE CANON HET IN IT. YEAH.

When Kamina and Yoko kissed, I was all "awwwwww" and thought it was really cute, and then I actually DID NOT MIND NIA at all and thought she and Simon were really cute. (She did get annoying once she became the EVIL ANTI-SPIRAL THING, which was the one big thing in the plot that I thought was super-stupid and tacked-on, but that kind of isn't regular-Nia's fault as a character? So.) And Kittan and Yoko. DDD: <333 POOR YOKO. Omg. Ohjesus, Kittan became my favorite through the time-skip arc, and I was CONVINCED after his buddies died that it meant he wouldn't die too BUT NO. HE DID. At least he died in an awesomely glorified noble way with the GIGA DRILL JKdfhlks but Kittan ;____;
Also, yeah, I cried when Kamina talked to Simon at the end. D: JUST SAYIN'.
All in all, I really liked it, not enough to get into the fandom or anything, but enough, even, that I'm looking forward to rewatching it with someone. It follows a lot of typical anime standards, but it was pretty damn cool!
Also, Kittan was my favorite. 8D;
